Nutrition Education and Promotion Section

The school kitchen will serve as a “learning laboratory” to allow students to apply nutrition skills taught in the classroom.  The promotion of healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low fat dairy products will be encouraged.  Education regarding local procurement and organic practices will be instilled.


Farm to School

As part of the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004, Farm to School Programs will connect schools with local farms.   Nightingale Montessori, to the extent possible, will buy and feature farm fresh foods; incorporate nutrition education curriculum; and provide students experiential learning opportunities.


Nutrition: Education Goals

Nightingale Montessori will encourage and support healthy eating by students and engage in nutrition promotion that is:  

  1. Offered as part of a sequential, comprehensive program for all grade levels (including Health and Family and Consumer Science) designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect their health.   

  2. Integrated into other areas of the curriculum such as math, science, language arts, social sciences and elective subjects, where appropriate and provides eating experiences, gardens and cooking classes.  

  3. Enjoyable, developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant, and includes participatory activities, such as international festival, healthy fundraisers, taste testings and field trips to include local farms and gardens, food banks.

  4. Be a part of the curriculum where students will learn to develop lifelong skills in nutrition, health education and physical activity and meal preparation. encompassing good hygiene, food safety and green practices throughout all programs.

Nightingale Montessori recognizes the lunch period as an integral part of the educational program.  We will strive to use the school kitchen as a “learning laboratory” to allow students to apply nutrition skills taught in the classroom, garden, kitchen.  Healthy foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products, will be encouraged.   


Physical: Education Goals

Nightingale Montessori offers structured and unstructured physical activity opportunities at all levels.  Curriculum supports structured and unstructured physical activity time. In addition, we will utilize working in the school gardens (and composting program) as well as sponsoring clubs such as Yoga club, Ski Club, and Running Clubs during the academic school year.


Student Health and Wellness Policy

  • Teachers are asked to be aware of all students’ health conditions. Send to the office to take temperatures when necessary. If a child is running a fever or has another symptom as listed in the Family Handbook, send him/her to the first aid area to await the  arrival of his/her family. The office will make arrangements for pick-up

  • If a child has a Health Plan or is seen in the first aid area, all support should be documented in the log

  • Evidence of any type of abuse or neglect must not be tolerated and must be reported to the Director and the authorities

  • Wear gloves when treating or assisting a child with a blood related injury, vomiting, or bowel and bladder control issues. All contaminated clothing should be placed in a plastic bag, zipped or tied and sent home.

  • All staff members should follow the proper procedures when checking in or distributing medicines

  • All medications are given from the office unless otherwise approved by the Office Administrator (i.e. field trips)

  • Clean all bodily fluids properly as instructed by using proper attire, cleaning and disposal procedures

  • Any communication to a staff member about a communicable disease will be posted and contain information and guidelines per the Health Department

  • Communicate safety issues to the Office

  • Communicate any incidents, complaints and charges to the Director
